Paving the way for the development of Kalamata Airport

Athens, 29 September 2021. The tender for the selection of a preferred consortium of consultants for the development of Kalamata airport – the first of the 23 regional airports that fall under HCAP’s responsibility and are included in its strategy for the development of public assets – has been completed successfully.

Six consortia submitted proposals, highlighting the significant interest in and dynamic of the whole process. Following the relevant evaluation, the consortium of Deloitte Business Solutions S.A., FCNC Financial Advisors LLC, Doxiadis Associates Consultants on Development and Ekistiks S.A., Maria I. Golfinopoulou-Katerina A. Christodoulou Law Firm (Your Legal Partners) and Dracopoulos and Vassalakis Law Firm (DVLaw) was appointed the preferred contractor.

The consortium will undertake to draft and submit a combined diagnostic study mapping the current situation. Drafting a business plan, it will submit specific proposals/solutions for the optimal development of the airport. It will also assist HCAP in the preparation of the tender process set for launch in the 2nd quarter of 2022.

Kalamata is the first step in the implementation of the HCAP strategy for the development of regional airports through securing significant investments in infrastructure, equipment and upgrading of the services provided.

Dimitris Konstantakopoulos, the HCAP Portfolio Manager responsible for the development of the 23 regional airports, noted that “the development of Kalamata airport will give a strong boost to tourism, not only in the immediate area, but also in the central and southern Peloponnese as a whole. It will expand and upgrade the quality of Kalamata’s air transport connection to major travel markets abroad, acting as a catalyst for further development and upgrading of the tourism product, with obvious benefits for the community and the economy of the wider region.”

According to 2019 data, 341,000 passengers travelled via Kalamata airport, 317,000 of which were from abroad. In 2019, total passenger traffic at the country’s 22 regional airports came to 1.8 million travellers on over 36,000 flights, showing the dynamic and potential resulting from the development of these airports.
